On Wednesday, January 20th, 2016, The Higher Education Assistance Group (HEAG) once again held their annual training conference in Newton, MA to keep their entire staff of financial aid consultants up to speed on all of the latest changes happening at the Department of Education (ED) for the upcoming 2016-17 award year. Presenters at the event included HEAG’s Executive Team and Senior Consultants, as well as, Zachary Goodwin, a Training Officer with Federal Student Aid.
The conference opened with amiable words from HEAG’s President, Milton Kerstein. The Senior Consulting team presented on industry-based topics such as “Do’s and Don’ts of Consulting” and “Top 10 Compliance Findings,” while the HEAG Executive Team discussed compliance in non-traditional programs plus an overview of HEAG accomplishments and goals for the upcoming year. Zachary Goodwin from ED, updated attendees on the most recent federal updates, as well as, training on the complexities of modules. The presentations ultimately concluded with a team game based off the classic game show, “Jeopardy!” to test the new knowledge learned by the consultants. After the training portion of the day was complete, all participants were invited to the annual holiday party, ending a productive day with a celebratory dinner including invited family members.
I’m sure many of the attendees would agree they gained a variety of new concepts and insights that they can now utilize when needed in their respective fields. The financial aid industry is constantly evolving at what seems like an ever-increasing pace. HEAG understands this and continues to keep their staff at the forefront of the change, so information can be passed on to staff and students at the collegiate level for which they are serving.
