Financial aid officers should liaise and even advocate to relevant offices and authorities to argue for extended deadlines or relaxed documentation requirements, allowing students more time to complete and submit their applications without penalties.

During this time, effective communication is imperative to mitigating confusion and anxiety among students and families. Financial aid officers should ramp up outreach efforts through multiple channels—emails, social media, webinars and workshops—to disseminate accurate information, updates and step-by-step guides on navigating the FAFSA application process. Clear and concise communication in multiple languages and using different means of communication will ensure inclusivity and accessibility for all applicants.

Individualized Support and Guidance

Each student’s financial situation is unique, and financial aid officers can provide personalized guidance to students and families. Offering one-on-one counseling sessions, virtual office hours, or workshops tailored to address specific concerns can alleviate apprehensions and streamline the application process for applicants with diverse financial backgrounds.

Leveraging Supplemental Resources and Tools

Acknowledging that this is a tumultuous time for financial aid administrators, it is more important than ever to take advantage of available supplemental resources to meet the added demands poised by the current challenges in the broader financial aid environment.
