Take Advantage of Professional Development Opportunities This Fall

Melissa Maichle .

We don’t get the downtime we once did when the Free Application for Federal Student Aid opened in January, but fall is still the best time for financial aid administrators to take advantage of the many professional development opportunities available.

State and Regional Conferences: After several years of virtual…well, everything…financial aid conferences are more often taking place in person. Attending these generally low-cost and close-to-home conferences not only checks the professional development box, but also allows staff to build those all-important industry relationships. Attendance is particularly beneficial for new administrators who entered the field since 2020. Check your state association’s website to find out if they or your regional association are hosting a conference this fall.

Federal Student Aid (FSA) Conference: The FSA Conference will be held virtually from November 29 to December 2, 2022. Registration opens in early October, but you can view draft session descriptions today. If your training budget doesn’t allow for all staff members to attend an in-person event, this is a comprehensive alternative to a live conference and it’s free!

The FSA Training Center: Speaking of free, The FSA Training Center updated its curriculum for the 2022/2023 academic year on August 1. Whether you’re a manager working to keep your team in the know or an individual trying to hone your skills, the Learning Plan Tutorial platform will give you the tools to do so. Another benefit is that your staff members can complete the material at their own pace when it’s convenient for them (and you!).

The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA): NASFAA offers a variety of training options, both online and in-person. Are you hoping for a credential after investing many hours into training? Follow the NASFAA tracks for certificates, designations or to become a Certified Financial Aid Administrator® (CFAA).

Customized Training and Beyond: Not only does the Higher Education Assistance Group offer customized training, but we can help you make sure your processes are efficient and compliant and your policy and procedure manual is up-to-date…everything you need to start the new award year.
